ABOUT ME

Greetings! My name is James Evans. I am an Ecuadorian-American Computer Science graduate that specializes in Video Game development and design.
During my time at Florida Polytechnic University, I spent my time learning about software and game development by attending Game Jams, working on personal projects, and helping friends with theirs. (On top of my coursework, of course!) In my free time I also elevated my skills in graphic and video design to broaden my abilities.

In the past few years, I have had the pleasure of being able to work on the team making the mobile MMO Kingdom Maker. Prior to that, I worked as the Lead Game Engineer for the indie gatcha game The End of The Line: New Age. As I work, my goal is to continually learn about game creation and try to understand not just the software side, but to develop interdisciplinary skills so that I can contribute in a variety of ways as well as understand and assist other departments better.
Work Experience
Client Software Engineer
Global Worldwide | June 2023-February 2024
At Global Worldwide, I have worked remotely with a team of multidisciplinary engineers to maintain and update the client code for the Massively Multiplayer Online mobile game Kingdom Maker. As a member of the Client Engineering team, I worked intently on debugging any pressing errors in the codebase, meticulously refactoring old code to fit with a more modern MVC structure, and even directly implementing user interfaces, such as a store menu screen. With Kingdom Maker being a massive, live service game with over 1 million downloads, our agile work environment focused on bringing the best experience to users by optimizing our codebase for minimum latency, implementing new features and events, and keeping a vigilant eye on user feedback to mend any grievances they might be having. Being a data-driven game, Kingdom Maker allowed me the pleasure of working on a variety of tasks ranging from front-end graphics programming, to working directly with Data on the back-end.
Lead Game Engineer
Legio Vox | October 2021-June 2023
I was hired by Legio Vox to plan, create, and maintain utilities and functionality in their Mobile Gacha Game, The End of The Line: New Age. This included programming UI, character abilities, and various other interactable game components. I was also tasked with tracking down reported bugs and fixing them.

A few months into employment, I was promoted to be Lead Engineer for Legio Vox. Within this new role I was tasked with leading a team of software engineers, working closely with other leads to keep strong communication, and planning the direction of the game from a software standpoint, along with everything I was doing previously. In the process, I had to find creative solutions and plan for major potential problems. A major task that I lead was overhauling our compression handling to allow for more efficient gameplay on mobile devices.
Community Director
Florida Polytechnic University | June 2020-May 2021
At Florida Poly, "Community Director" is the title given to student leaders that were supervised the Resident Assistants in the dorms. I was one of three Community Directors that oversaw the RAs. As a Community Director, my job was to make sure my staff had the support they needed, was on top of their tasks, and could create exciting events for the residents to attend. Beyond that, we were also given miscellaneous tasks to benefit the Florida Poly community like throwing our own events or coming up with processes for Res Life.

I personally took the task to create an online method of communicating with and engaging residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic. My solution was to create a Discord server which I managed along with other team members. This solution allowed for residents to interact without having to be in person, but also had unforeseen benefits such as increased event participation due to better advertisement, easier announcements, higher community engagement, and new opportunities with events and community development.

Resident Assistant
Florida Polytechnic University | August 2018-May 2020
As a Resident Assistant at Florida Poly, I was in charge of planning events, engaging residents, and making sure student living functioned properly and safely for the students that lived on campus. I worked closely in a team of other RAs to create events and make life on campus more enjoyable. Through this experience, I also honed my digital graphics and advertisement skills by creating fun hall decorations and engaging event posters.

Having worked on-call shifts, I was also on the front line of crisis response in the dorms. Because of this, I have learned to be able to make calm and rational decisions in intense situations.

In my early years as an RA, I also worked as a leasing consultant for RISE real estate where I helped applicants sign leases and dealt with optimizing the leasing process for applicants to the dorms at Florida Poly. I also helped with optimizing workflow for my coworkers and supervisors when possible.
